Прослушивание и чтение вслух текста Гимн Америки
O say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Read the text and answer the questions.
Its text was taken from the poem "The Defense of Fort Mchenry", written in 1814 by Francis Scott
Key. The author, a 35-year-old lawyer and part-time amateur poet, wrote this text after witnessing the
shelling of the Mchenry Fortress in Baltimore by British ships during the War of 1812. The first
performance took place in Baltimore on October 29 after the American premiere of August von
Kotzebue's play Count Benevsky. The song became officially used in the US Navy (in 1889), then in
the White House (in 1916), and on March 3, 1931, it was declared the national anthem by a resolution
of Congress. Before that, there was no officially enshrined US national anthem. Until 1931, either the
Hail Columbia song or the My Country song, 'Tis of Thee, were used in practice as the US anthem.
The banner studded with stars is the American flag, hence the name of the anthem. The song has 4
verses, but today only the first of them is widely known.

by a resolution of Congress.
8)

9)
8)How many verses does the song have? 4
My Country, 'Tis
of Thee. Знамя, усыпанное звёздами -это американский флаг, отсюда и название гимна.
Песня имеет 4 куплета, но сегодня только первый из них является широко известным.

Stars and Stripes.
The history of Old Glory goes back to early colonial days. The first banner used in the colonies was, of
course, the standard English flag, consisting of a red cross on a white field. The flags of the separate
colonies followed the same lines except that occasionally a pine tree, or a hemisphere, was figured in
the upper left quarter of the cross.
The beginning of the Revolution brought a flood of suggestions as to the design for a new standard.
But it was not until June 14,1777, that official action was taken, when the Continental Congress passed
a resolution fixing the design as thirteen alternate red and white stripes, and thirteen white stars on a
blue field. Each star and each stripe represented a state. As each new state was admitted to the Union, a
star and a stripe were added, but it was soon realized that the addition of many more stripes would
make the flag too bulky. Consequent
ly
, after having been increased to fifteen, the number of bars was
reduced to the original number. But the number of stars steadily increased, until the present number of
50 equals the same number of states. The story goes that Betty Ross sewed the first flag, and it was at
her suggestion that five-pointed, instead of six-pointed, stars were used.
While controversy continues as to why Congress selected this design, there is good reason to believe
that the coat of arms of the Washington family, which con
tain
s both stars and stripes, furnished the
inspiration.
It is interesting to note that, prior to the adoption of an official flag, a banner frequently used bore the
figure of a rattlesnake, coiled to strike, with the motto, «Don’t tread on me.»

Washington, the capital of the United States is situated on the Potomac River in the District of
Columbia. The district is a piece of land which does not belong to any one state but to all the states.
The district is named in honor of Columbus, the discoverer of America.
Washington was founded in 1791 for the purpose of serving as the capital of the United States of
America. George Washington chose the place located midway to keep at close touch as possible
between the states. Washington is quite new as it didn't exist for two hundred years. The population
of the city is nearly million people. It is not a very large city, but it is very important as the capital of
the USA. There is a law in Washington against building structures higher than the Capitol; therefore
it presents a different appearance from New York with its skyscrapers.
Washington has many historical places. The largest and tallest is the Capitol, where the Congress
meets. It is a very beautiful building with white marble columns. Not far from the Capitol is the
Library of Congress. It holds five million books.
The White House, the residence of the president is the oldest public structure in the capital and one of
the most beautiful. It was built in 1799. It is a two storied white building. It is said that in 1812 when
England was at war with America the British entered the city and some of the buildings, including
the Capitol and the house of the president were set on fire. Two years later in order to hide the marks
of the fire, the brown stone walls of the president's home were painted white and it has been the
White House ever since.
Not far from the Capitol is the Washington monument, which looks like a very big pencil. It rises 160
meters and it is empty inside. A special lift brings visitors to the top in 70 seconds from where they
can enjoy a view of the city.
The Jefferson Memorial was built in memory of the third President of the USA Thomas Jefferson,
who was also the author of the Declaration of Independence. The Memorial is surrounded by cherry
trees.
The Lincoln Memorial is devoted to the memory of the sixteenth President of the USA, the author of
the Emancipation Proclamation, which gave freedom to Negro slaves in America.

THE CAPITOL. Jenkins Hill was chosen as the site for the nation’s capitol building. The design
featured two identical wings, one for the House of Representatives and one for the Senate, joined by a
round, domed center room, called a rotunda. George Washington laid the corner stone for the Capitol
with a silver trowel on September 18, 1793. The sculpture “Freedom” on the top of the Capitol dome
was put in place in 1830. In 1959 the Capitol was enlarged again. Today the Capitol contains 540
rooms.
THE WHITE HOUSE. The oldest public building in Washington, D.C., is also the most famous
residence in America. George Washington never lived in the White House. The White House has been
the home of all American presidents since November 1800 when George Washington’s successor,
John Adams moved in it with a prayer “May none but honest and wise men ever rule under this roof.”
The White House has 132 rooms and 20 bathrooms.
THE WASHINGTON MONUMENT. The Confederation Congress decided to erect a monument to
George Washington in 1783. But the monument remained an idea until Independence Day 1848 and it
was finished finally in 1884. Three years later the Washington Monument was opened to public. The
Washington Monument rises 555 feet and is surrounded by 50 American flags. It is the tallest point in
Washington, D.C. Some people call the monument “Pencil” due to the form.
LINCOLN MEMORIAL. The magnificent memorial building is constructed of white Colorado Yule
marble. A magnificent 19-feet marble statue by Daniel Chester French of a pensive but resolute
Lincoln seated in a chair, dominates the inner space of the memorial. Below the memorial lines a
rectangular pool of water, the Reflecting Pool. Inscribed in stone on an inner wall facing Lincoln’s
statue is his Gettysburg Address from 1863.
THE PENTAGON. The Pentagon is a building in Arlington, Virginia, near Washington, D.C. It has
the offices of the U.S. Department of Defense. The Department of Defense includes the Army, Navy,
Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard. The word pentagon comes from the Greek penta, which means
“five”. A pentagon is a figure with five sides. The Pentagon has five rings. The rings are inside each
other. Each ring has five sides. Each ring is five stories tall.

New York, or the Big Apple, as the Americans often call it, is the largest city in the USA and in the
whole world. It stands in the mouth of the Hudson River. The people of New York City (NYC) live
within five boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island. Manhattan Island,
the oldest part of the city, was bought from the Native Americans for the amount of goods worth $ 26.
Now it is one of the busiest financial and cultural centre in the world, offering the visitors a unique
collection of experiences and attractions. There is a wide choice of internationally acclaimed theatres,
restaurants and museums, historic parks and churches.
Manhattan is also a district of business and finance. In Wall Street there are offices of large companies
and banks, as well as New York Stock Exchange, which dominates the business life of the whole
world. New York is an international city. On the map of Manhattan one can find Little Italy with the
Italian restaurants and its own way of life, Brighton Beach, where the immigrants from the former
Soviet Union live and Chinatown, inhabited by the Chinese. NY is also famous for its fine department
stores and boutiques. In the evening you can enjoy one of its many nightclubs, the ballet, opera, a show
or concert. Broadway is the centre of nightlife. It is the longest street in New York with many sights.
The best way to go around NY is on foot. One word applies to driving your own car in Manhattan:
don’t! Streets are jammed and the parking is scarce and astronomically expensive.
However, NYC is a paradise for walkers, who enjoy the finest window shopping and people-watching.
When proper caution is exercised, most areas are safe. It is best to use well-lighted, busy streets at
night. You can also travel anywhere you want by subway and buses. Subway, though rather Inattractive
and not so well organized as in Moscow, runs 24 hours a day. The fare is $ 1.50 for a single journey,
payable with tokens. Free bus and subway system maps are available from hotels, tourist information
centres and subway stations. However one gets around New York, it is important to know some basic
geography: Fifth Avenue divides the city between East and West. Street numbers begin at Fifth
Avenue, so Two W. (west) 57th Street is just a few steps to the west of the Fifth Avenue, while Two E.
(east) 219 57th Street is just to the east. Most streets in Manhattan are one-way. With a few exceptions,
traffic on even-numbered streets travels east and traffic on odd-numbered streets travels west. To New
Yorkers, “downtown” does not connote the city centre. Rather, “downtown” simply means “south” and
“uptown” means “north”.
Thousands of tourists come to New York every day to see the Statue of Liberty, which is situated on
Liberty Island and is a symbol of American democracy. It has a torch of Freedom in her right hand.
New York is famous for its skyscrapers, among which are the Chrysler Building and the Empire State
Building.
The unprecedented terrorist attack on September 11, 2001 disguised the face of New York. Two twin
towers, which used to form the World Trade Centre, were destroyed as the result of the planes crash.
This was the tragic day for the people of the USA and for the whole world. Two towers were in ruins
in the matter of minutes. The life of the big city was paralyzed completely for more than a month. Now
the WTC is under reconstruction

Every country has its own holidays. They reflect the history of the country and its cultural and
religious traditions. Some religious holidays are common in different countries. They are Christmas
and Easter.
Americans celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December. They buy a lot of presents for each other, for
their parents, children and friends.
The New Year's Day, the 1st of January is not so wide
ly celebrated
in the United States as we do it in
Russia. Of course, the most important holiday in America is the 4th of July, the Independence Day.
People like to watch colourful fireworks in the evening. The 4th of July is the day-off and people don't
go to work.
The holidays when people don't go to work are: Martin Luther King's day on the 20th of January,
Labour Day on the 7th of September and Thanksgiving on the last Friday of November.
On Thanksgiving Americans usually eat turkey. This holiday reminds the time when the first colonists
(pilgrims) from England came to America in 1620 and could survive in the unknown land. There is
still a big white stone on the shore in Plymouth in Massachusetts, that the pilgrims landed on. It is
called “The Plymouth Rock”.
The 31st of October is the children's most favourite holiday — Halloween. On this day children,
dressed in funny dresses visit their neighbours and say “Trick or treat!” and get sweets.
The rest of the holidays are usually on weekends. They are: the Flag's Day, Mother's Day, Armed
Forces Day. Americans also celebrate Lincoln's birthday, Washing
ton's birthday
, President's Day in
February.
The 14th of February is Valentine's day or as it is called “All lovers day”.

1.Перекрестное чтение Crisscrossed reading.
It was in 1620, in the time of King James the First. English people did not like their king and they
called him 'The Foolish King of England'. Many of them even left England and went to live in other
countries.
In November, 1620, a small ship, the Mayflower, left England. There were about one hundred people
aboard the ship, but even for this hundred the ship was too small. For seven long weeks the Mayflower
was in the waves and storms of the Atlantic Ocean, and at last the people saw land. It was America.
It was already autumn. It was raining and a cold wind was blowing. Sixteen men left the Mayflower
and went ashore. In the evening they came back to the ship and brought some maize with them. They
found the maize in the sand on the beach where the Indians had left it. Nobody in Europe had seen
maize then, but when the people on board the Mayflower tried it they liked it very much.
Next day was Sunday and everybody on the Mayflower had a rest. On Monday some men went ashore
again and this time they took some women with them. The women had to wash the clothes. Since that
time Monday has been a wash-day in America.
During the next five weeks the men from the Mayflower left the ship every day. Sometimes they did
not come back for many days; they were looking for a good place to live. The weather was very cold,
more and more men fell ill, but at last they found a good place. There was a good harbour for ships
there, some fields and forests near it and even a small river. The people began to build a village there.
By January, 1621, there were already two streets in this village, and they called it 'New Plymouth'.

II Работа с текстом. И. П. Агабекян стр 275
American society seems to be much more informal than the British and, in some ways, is
characterized by less social distinction. Students do not rise when a teacher enters the room. One
does not always address a person by his title, such as "Major" or "General" or "Doctor" in the
case of a holder of a Doctor of Philosophy degree. The respectful "Sir" is not always used in the
northern and western parts of the country.
However, it is best to use a person's title when first meeting him/her, and then allow the person
to tell you how he/she wishes to be called.
They use first names when calling each other, slap on the back, joke and are much freer in their
speech, which is more slangy than the conventional British English. You will often hear the word
"Hi" (a form of greeting among friends) used instead of the usual "Hello," and "Howdy" instead
of "How do you do?"
Those who don't easily show these signs of friendship are called "snooty" or "snobbish." In
contrast, people who show such simple signs of friendship, particularly to their own economic
and social inferiors, are praised as "regular guys," or as "truly democratic." As a description of
character, democratic is generally used to signify that a person of high social or economic status
acts in such a way that his or her inferiors are not reminded of their inferiority.
Yet, in spite of all the informality, Americans, even in the way they address each other, show
consciousness of social distinction. For example, one is likely to use somewhat more formal
language when talking to superiors. While the informal "Hello" is an acceptable greeting from
employee to employer, the employee is more apt to say "Hello, Mr. Ferguson," while the
employer may reply "Hello, Jim." Southerners make a point of saying "Yes, sir," or "Yes,
Ma'am," or "No, sir," or "No, Ma'am," when talking to an older person or a person in a position
of authority. While this is good form all over the United Stales, "Yes. Mr. Weston" or "No, Mrs.
Baker" is somewhat more common in a similar situation in the North or West.
Certain other forms of politeness are observed on social occasions. Women may wear hats in
church. in restaurants, and often when attending luncheons in public places and other public
social functions except those that take place in the evening. Men who do wear hats ordinarily
remove them in elevators, churches, restaurants, private homes, business offices — in fad, in
most public situations when they wish to show respect.

I like to read very much. Best of all I like to read detective stories, historical novels and books
about adventures. That's why I prefer books by Fenimore Cooper, Jack London, Agatha Christie
and others. My favourite writer is Mark Twain. He was the founder of the realistic American
novel of the present day. Mark Twain wrote such famous novels as «The Adventures of Tom
Sawyer», «The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn», «The Prince and the Pauper» and many
others. He was also a great short story writer.
Mark Twain's real name was Samuel Clemens. He was born in 1835 in a small village on the
Mississippi River. His father died when Sam was twelve years old, and the 'boy had to work to
support the family. All his life Twain liked to read. He spent all his free time in libraries and read
the works of such famous authors as Shakespeare, Dickens, Servantes, Voltaire and others. Later
he became a pilot of a steamship on the Mississippi. There he learned much about men. His pen-
name — Mark Twain — comes from that period of his life. It means «mark two». Much later he
became a journalist, and then a famous writer known all over the world. There is much humour
in most of Mark Twain's works. But there is also social criticism and satire.

Скрипт.
Samuel Langhorne Clemens better known by his pen name Mark Twain was an American author
and humorist. He was born in 30th November 1835 in Florida, Missouri. When he was four,
Twain's family moved to Hannibal, Missouri, a port town on the Mississippi River that inspired
the fictional town of St. Petersburg in ‘The Adventures of Tom Sawyer’ and ‘The Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn’. When Mark Twain was 11, he left school after the fifth grade to become a
printer's apprentice. When he was 18, he left Hannibal and worked as a printer in New York City,
Philadelphia. During this time he mailed his stories to his brother. His brother Orion published
Sam’s works in his Muscatine Journal. He was also a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi River.
September of 1863 he became a writer for the Virginia City, Nevada. He used his pseudonym
‘Mark Twain’ for the first time, which is a steamboat term that means ‘12 feet of water’. Twain’s
earlier life was the back drop in his 1st book “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”. This book
explores the mischievous and wild deeds of a young boy coming of age. Twain round out his
forties with 2 books that bring him back to his Mississippi years. ‘Life on the Mississippi’ in 1883
and ‘Adventures of Huckleberry Finn’ in 1885. ‘Huckleberry Finn’ was the first book published
by his company. Twain died at the age of 74 of a heart attack at his home and buried far from
Hannibal, New York.
Mark Twain really is one of the most incredible and influential writers in the American literature.
His influence is still very much in writing today. Called by many as a father of American literature
Mark Twain was born Samuel Clemens on the 30
th
of November 1835 in Missouri.
When Samuel was 12 his father died of pneumonia. At the age of 15 he got a job working for his
brother’s newspaper in Hannibal Western Union.
Mark Twain became a cub pilot on a steam boat on the Mississippi river. It was probably the best
time in his life.
But in 1861 when the Civil War broke out the steam boat life absolutely came to an end and he
was out of job. During the Civil war he served in the army. After several quarrels with his brother
he eventually made his way to San Francisco where he began his career again as a journalist. His
first real success came in 1865 with the publication of the humorous story ‘The Jumping Frog’. It
had a huge success and was printed and reprinted all over the country.
Mark Twain best known and best-loved books are ‘Tom Sawyer’ published in 1876 and
‘Huckleberry Finn’ published in 1885. All American literature comes from Mark Twain.
He was able to capture an inaccurate speech of different classes. Twain was the first person to put
this kind of vocabulary into American writing.
Twain is an immensely prolific writer. He wrote 29 books, a vast number of stories, lectures, and
essays.
In his last 15 years he was probably the most celebrated American around the world. He received
honorary degrees from Gale and from Oxford.
In 1895-96 he gave lecture tutorials around the world. Mark Twain is the first father of the
American most celebrities because he was so great at capturing public imagination and it became
important to him to hub the public image.
He always booked himself a white suit. He only wanted to be photographed in a white suit. He
tended that image very carefully.
At the age of 74 he died at his Connecticut home on the 23 of April 1910.
He is (was) one of the towering figures in the American Literature because he is funny and smart
and willing and the most powerful and I think it was something deeply in the American character
that response to that.

George Washington, known as the “Father of his country” was the first president of the United
States. He was born on February 22, 1732 in Westmoreland County, Virginia, then a British
colony.
In March 1775, Washington was elected to the Second Continental Congress. By the time he
attended the Congress, the opening battles of American Revolution had already been fought in
Massachusetts. In June, G. Washington was elected to be the commander –in- chief of the
colonial army.
In 1787 Washington was elected to head the Virginia delegation at the Constitutional
Convention.
In the country, people linked his name directly to the Constitution. Washington was elected the
president in February1789 with the largest possible number of votes. He was inaugurated in New
York City, at that time the capital of the United States.
George Washington was 65 when he left the presidency, but he did not lose connections with
public affairs. He also made trips to watch construction of the new city of Washington, D.C.,
which was then called the Federal City. At the time of his death, he had the rank of lieutenant
general. In 1976, the U. S. Congress gave him the title of general of the armies of the United
States.
