Which of the customs above are true in your country?
III. Чтение.
Work in two groups.
Group A Read the text below.
Which of the things in ex 2 are mentioned in your text?
Group A read the text again. What is the significance of the following?
Pens//four flowers// a clock//silver goods//a leather briefcase//red flowers
ADVICE FOR UK BUSINESS TRAVELERS
GIVING GIFTS
Japan
Unlike the UK gift giving is very important in Japan and is usually happens at the end of the visit. Pens
are a good idea or something not available in Japan. If you give flowers, avoid giving 4 or 9 flowers as
these are unlucky numbers.
China
Chinese people will probably refuse your gift several times, but it is polite to continue offering it to them.
Do not give clocks to Chinese people as the Chinese word for ‘clock’ is similar to the word for ‘death’.
Middle East
Give gifts of highest quality leather, silver or crystal. Remember to avoid alcohol or leather from pigs.
South America
Gift giving is less formal in South America but still an important part of culture. Avoid leather as many of
the world’s leather products come from South America.
Australia, Canada. USA and Europe
Give giving in these countries is informal and not always expected. However, it is polite to bring someone
flowers, Chocolates or wine when visiting their house. In some European countries, you should avoid red
flowers (associated with romance)
Group B
Group B read the text below. Which of the things in ex 2 are mentioned in your text?
Read the text again. What is the significance of the following?
Surnames
First names
30 centimeters
Strong handshakes
Bowing
Kissing
ADVICE FOR UK BUSINESS TRAVELLERS
Forms of address
In most countries, business people use surnames when they talk to each other. In some countries (e.g.
Germany and Switzerland) business people use surnames even when they know each other well. To be
safe, continue using someone’s surname until he/she asks you to use his/her first name.
Personal Space
People in South America and Southern Europe stand quite close to each other while talking-about 60 cm
apart, while in the Middle East they sometimes stand even closer-less than 30 cm apart. People from
Northern Europe and the USA stand further apart and feel uncomfortable if you stand too close. Their
preferred distance is 75 to 90 cm apart.
Physical Greetings
In most countries people shake hands when they meet in business situations. You should be careful that
your handshake is not too strong or too weak. In Asia, the main form of greeting is the bow. When greeting
Westerners many Asians follow the bow with a handshake. Even in countries where it is common to kiss
(e.g. Italy and Russia) it usually only for people who know each other well.
Work with a student who read the text A. Answer your partners questions about the text.
Now ask your partner about his/her text.
1 When should you give presents in Japan?
2 What kind of gift should you give in Japan?
3 Is it OK to give 4 flowers in Japan?
4 Is it OK to give clocks in China?
5 Why should you be careful with leather products in South America?
6 Is it always OK to give flowers in Europe?
B Work with a student who read text B. Ask these questions about his/her text.
1.
Should you use first names in Germany?
2.
In which part of the world do people stand closest to each other?
3.
Why don’t American people like you to stand too close to them?
4.
Should you show how strong you are when you shake hands?
5.
Do ancient people ever shake hands?
6.
Do business people kiss each other in Russia?
Now answer your partner’s questions about your text.
Read the saying below and discuss the questions.
‘When in Roman do as Romans do’
1.
What does the saying mean?
2.

I-Interviewer W-Writer
I It’s great to have you with us today. So… how did you start travelling?
W-Well, as a child I travelled a lot with my family. We did some fantastic trips like cycling
through Europe when I was 13. By the time I was 16 I had visited 19 countries.
I And how did you start writing?
W When I travelled I always wrote a diary. I didn’t want to forget all the things that I had seen
and experienced.
So I wrote it all down. At first, it was just facts. Then I added my feelings and stories about the
places and the people.
I it’s sometimes difficult to get srarted as a writer… what was your first ‘break’ as a travel
writer?
W It was luck really. I had lived in Turkey for about two years. Then a friend of mine, who
worked for a travel company, said he needed someone to write a travel guide about Turkey. So I
did it. Other writing jobs came from that.
3 Listen again and answer these questions.
1.
How did she start travelling?

I-Interviewer W-Writer
I and what is the most difficult thing when you are travelling?
W The language can be difficult. I love talking to people. But sometimes it’s hard work when
you can’t speak the language.
I And when you are writing …what is the most difficult thing when you are writing?
W When I get home from travelling I have notebooks full of notes. I often feel like writing about
everything. The most difficult thing is deciding what to include and what to leave out.
I Which travel authors or books have influenced you?
W Some travel writers I like are Bruce Chatwin and Shiva Naipaul. But it was Bill Bryson who
made me really want to be a travel writer?
I What advice would you give to someone thinking of being a travel writer?
W Firstly, read as many books as you can. And, secondly, take notes of as many details as you
can when you are travelling. Finally, go for it! Being a travel writer really is a dream job!
5 Listen again and answer these questions.
1.
What is the most difficult things for her when she is travelling?

II.Письмо.
1 Look at the photo and read the text about Havana. Which of these things are mentioned?
Music//people//weather//buildings// countryside// transport//food and drink
Last summer we went to Havana, the capital of Cuba. It’s really interesting city-full of old cars,
bicycles, friendly people and, of course, music. The weather was hot, even in the evenings and
music came from every bar. The sound of trumpets and drums was everywhere. One evening we
stopped in a bar with a yellow door. It looked like many of the old buildings in Havana-
unpainted for years. But the food and the coffee were fantastic. I had never tasted such delicious
coffee as before.

READING
Read the text about holidays in Bulgaria
For holiday makers who wish to try something without spending too much money Bulgaria is a very
interesting country. It is a country which has changed very quickly over the last decade and today we can
see a modern and progressive country. It has become a very popular destination for British tourists thanks
to the diversity of the country; it has dramatic mountains, popular beaches by the Black Sea, castles and
palaces as well as some impressive Roman ruins. The food is delicious and not very expensive and the
coffee is excellent. But the biggest thing which attracts more tourists is the wonderful hospitality of the
Bulgarians.
Sofia is a very interesting capital city with an unusual mix of different architectural styles. A lot of Sofia
was destroyed but it was rebuilt after World War Two. However, one of the two 14
th
century buildings
survived the war. A large mountain called mount Vitosha can be seen from many streets in the city and
this is a popular place for skiing and trekking. The mountain can be easily reached by local bus. Another
popular city to visit is Varna because it has lovely beaches, but this can be busy during the summer
months.
About 8 percent of the population is of Turkish origin And this can be seen in Bulgaria’s typical meals
and traditional music. There are many colorful festivals in different regions of the country that are
exciting to watch.
The weather in Bulgaria is temperate with cold, wet winters and hot dry summers. Spring is probably the
best time to visit as the weather is mild and a lot of cultural events take place.
The typical diet in this country is meat, potatoes and beans, and meals almost always come with salads.
You can also find kebabs and pizzas in many fast food restaurants at very good prices.
As I have mentioned the Bulgarian people are extremely friendly and open. Their hospitality towards
foreigners is excellent. It is also interesting to watch how Bulgarians communicate, in particular the fact
that they nod their heads to say no and they shake their heads to say yes. This can be very confusing at
first but people adapt to it after a while.
All things considered, Bulgaria is really an experience I will never forget.
Task1. Underline the correct endings to the sentences.
Example
Bulgaria has changed
a)
Only a little b)a reasonable amount c) a lot in recent years

b)

c)

3. You can get a local bus to Mount Vitosha from Sofia, it’s
a)
not difficult
b)
quite expensive
c)

4. The Turkish origins of Bulgaria are evident in its music and
a)
food
b)

5. The writer thinks the weather in Bulgaria is best in
a)
summer
b)

c)

6. Meals in Bulgaria are usually served with
a)

b)

c)

6 points (1 point for each answer)
Task 2. Answer the questions.

Tape script
Tanya Coles is a thirty-three year old accounts department manager from Barbados who has lived in
West London for fifteen years. She works for a company which makes industrial products and is
married with two children. Life for her in London, however, hasn’t always been easy.
‘When I first arrived here I was only a teenager and life was difficult because I had to work hard to
survive. I had to do all kinds of different jobs including cleaning, nannying and factory work before I
had enough money to get a place of my own. In those early days it was sometimes hard to cope with
life and I also lost touch with nearly all my friends who live back in Barbados. However, I was
determined to succeed and I used to push myself hard to achieve my goals. I often had to rely on my
mental strength as a person.
Little by little life became better as I got to know more people and I could finally study for a diploma
in accounting. Shortly after I graduated, I got married to Robert and we now have two lovely kids:
Roger, who is nearly a teenager, and Bertha, who is just a toddler. I have worked in my present job for
four years now and I get on really well with nearly all my colleagues. I earn a reasonable salary
although it’s not as much as it should be and I still find time to study and improve my professional
skills. I have to look after my children too, of course, but I don’t mind because I really like doing it. I
am now much happier than I was fifteen years ago. The advice that I can give to someone who is
starting a new life in a different country is that you should not feel too sad when things go badly. You
should think positively and see it as a challenge and, if you are brave and ambitious enough, you will
have a great chance to be successful.

What a terrible mistake! I have tried to do everything right since arriving in Russia, and now I have
made a stupid mistake. Yesterday, Dimitri gave me some advice about how to behave in Russia. He
explained that Russians are very polite. ‘You should always offer to help a lady’, he explained.
‘Gentlemen should pour drinks, and open doors, and do other things to help them.’
So last night when I went out to dinner with Nicolai, and his wife, Yulia, I wanted to do my best. At
the end of the meal I offered Yulia a banana from the fruit basket. She smiled, and accepted, but she
didn’t take one. I didn’t know what to do, so I picked a banana, peeled it and handed it to her. Yulia
and Nikolai both smiled so I thought I had done the right thing. I told everyone at the hotel that in
Russia, the polite thing is to peel bananas for the ladies.
But now I have learned my mistake. Grigori has just told me that in Russia, when a man peels a
banana for a lady it means he has a romantic interest in her. I feel so embarrassed.
