I Ведущий. Good evening, boys and girls! We are glad to welcome you to our English party.
Our school party is devoted to Mark Twain, a famous American writer. Some of his books are very
popular with the children in our country, in other countries of the world and in America, of course. What
books are these? Do you know? Yes, you are right! Here are the ‘Adventures of Tom Soyer ‘,’The Prince
and the Pauper’,’ Life on the Mississippi’. These books are great favourites not only with the boys and
girls all over the world but also with grown-up readers.
In these books Mark Twain shows the joys and sorrows of children with such deep understanding and
sympathy that reader’s always see themselves in the characters. As Mark Twain said later, many events
in ‘The Adventures of Tom Sawyer’ really happened and the characters were taken from real life.
There is also a strong satirical element and humor in these books.
Mark Twain whose real name was Samuel Clemens, was born in 1835 in the town Florida, state
Missouri. He was the son of a lawyer.
Little Samuel spent his childhood in in the small town Hannibal on the Mississippi river. He was a
bright, lively boy. He went fishing and swimming to the river and he was the leader in all the boys’
games.
Samuel had a lot of friends at school. And when he became a writer he described them in his stories.
When Samuel was 12 years old, his father died, leaving his wife and four children with nothing. And the
boy had to leave school and look for work. He learned the profession of a printer. For some years
Samuel worked as a printer for the town newspaper and later for his elder brother, who at that time
started a small newspaper of his own. The two young men published it themselves. Samuel wrote short
humorous stories and printed them in their newspaper.
When Samuel was a boy, he dreamed of becoming a sailor. At the age of 20, he found a job on a ship
travelling up and down the Mississippi.
Here on a ship he ‘found’ his pen-name Mark Twain. It was taken from the call of the Mississippi pilots
when they measured the depth of the river.
Many steamboats moved up and down the river carrying all kinds of people -rich and poor, farmers and
businessmen, slave owners and slaves. Thus Samuel Clemens saw America passing before his eyes.
This work gave him the opportunity to get to know great deal about life. He worked as a pilot for more
than four years.
Later he used to speak about this time as the happiest period of his life and described it in his book ‘Life
on the Mississippi’.
Then the young man worked with the goldminers in California for a year.. Here he began to write
stories about camplife and sent them to newspapers. Under the name of Mark Twain.
Mark Twain did not get a good education but he knew the folk songs and tales of the negroes who lived
along the Mississippi river, where he grew up.
II.
on
the
Range”.
Home on the Range Brewster M. Higley
Oh, give me a home where the buffalo roam,
Where the deer and the antelope play,
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word
And the skies are not cloudy all day.
Chorus:
Home, Home on the range,
Where the deer and the antelope play,
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word
And the skies are not cloudy all day.
How often at night where the heavens are bright
With the light from the glittering stars,
Have I stood there amazed and asked I gazed
If their glory exceeds that of ours.
(Chorus)
Oh, give me a land where the bright diamond sand
Flows leisurely down the stream.
Where the graceful white swan goes gliding along
Like a maid in a heavenly dream.
(Chorus)
III. The many professions that he tried gave Mark Twain a knowledge of life and people and
helped him to find his true calling that of a writer. It should be noticed that American satirical and
critical literature began with Mark Twain.
In 1876 he published the ‘Adventures of Tom Sawyer’ and 8 years later ‘The Adventures of Huckleberry
Finn’. These two novels are now known to children and grownups all over the world.
Among Mark Twain’s books is ‘The Prince and the Pauper’, a tale loved by children all over the world.
Writing did not bring much money to Mark Twain, so he had to give lectures on literature and read
stories to the public. He visited many countries and lived in England for a long time. In 1907 Oxford
University gave Mark an honorary doctorate of letters.
We advise you to read Mark Twain.

)
Ben: “Tom! What are you doing? (Том делает вид, что не слышит. Продолжает молча красить
забор) Hello, Tom! Why are you working today?
Tom: “Oh, it’s you, Ben, I didn’t see you.”
Ben: “I’m going to the river. Come with me. But you must work, I see.”
Tom: “Work? I like it.”
Ben: “You like it?”
Tom: “Very much”.
Ben: (думает): “Tom, let me paint a little.”

Billy Fisher: Hello, what are you doing?
Ben: Tom and I are whitewashing the fence.
Billy: Tom, let me do some whitewashing.
Tom: “Oh, no, Billy.”
Billy: Please, Tom. I’ll give you my player to listen to music (kite to play).
Tom: (думает ) Ok.
Tom: (думает): Ok.
Aunt Polly: Oh, it’s all done. You are a good boy, Tom. You can work when you want to.
Yes, I’ve finished. Look,
Aunt Polly.
Aunt Polly: Good job, Tom. Now you can go to the river.
Samuel Langhorne Clemens better known by his pen name Mark Twain was an American author and
humorist. He was born in 30th November 1835 in Florida, Missouri. When he was four, Twain's family
moved to Hannibal, Missouri, a port town on the Mississippi River that inspired the fictional town of St.
Petersburg in ‘The Adventures of Tom Sawyer’ and ‘The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn’. When Mark
Twain was 11, he left school after the fifth grade to become a printer's apprentice. When he was 18, he left
Hannibal and worked as a printer in New York City, Philadelphia. During this time he mailed his stories
to his brother. His brother Orion published Sam’s works in his Muscatine Journal. He was also a
steamboat pilot on the Mississippi River. September of 1863 he became a writer for the Virginia City,
Nevada. He used his pseudonym ‘Mark Twain’ for the first time, which is a steamboat term that means
‘12 feet of water’. Twain’s earlier life was the back drop in his 1st book “The Adventures of Tom
Sawyer”. This book explores the mischievous and wild deeds of a young boy coming of age. Twain round
out his forties with 2 books that bring him back to his Mississippi years. ‘Life on the Mississippi’ in 1883
and ‘Adventures of Huckleberry Finn’ in 1885. ‘Huckleberry Finn’ was the first book published by his
company. Twain died at the age of 74 of a heart attack at his home and buried far from Hannibal, New
York.
Mark Twain really is one of the most incredible and influential writers in the American literature. His
influence is still very much in writing today. Called by many as a father of American literature Mark
Twain was born Samuel Clemens on the 30
th
of November 1835 in Missouri.
When Samuel was 12 his father died of pneumonia. At the age of 15 he got a job working for his
brother’s newspaper in Hannibal Western Union.
Mark Twain became a cub pilot on a steam boat on the Mississippi river. It was probably the best time in
his life.
But in 1861 when the Civil War broke out the steam boat life absolutely came to an end and he was out of
job. During the Civil war he served in the army. After several quarrels with his brother he eventually
made his way to San Francisco where he began his career again as a journalist. His first real success came
in 1865 with the publication of the humorous story ‘The Jumping Frog’. It had a huge success and was
printed and reprinted all over the country.
Mark Twain best known and best-loved books are ‘Tom Sawyer’ published in 1876 and ‘Huckleberry
Finn’ published in 1885. All American literature comes from Mark Twain.
He was able to capture an inaccurate speech of different classes. Twain was the first person to put this
kind of vocabulary into American writing.
Twain is an immensely prolific writer. He wrote 29 books, a vast number of stories, lectures, and essays.
In his last 15 years he was probably the most celebrated American around the world. He received
honorary degrees from Gale and from Oxford.
In 1895-96 he gave lecture tutorials around the world. Mark Twain is the first father of the American most
celebrities because he was so great at capturing public imagination and it became important to him to hub
the public image.
He always booked himself a white suit. He only wanted to be photographed in a white suit. He tended that
image very carefully.
At the age of 74 he died at his Connecticut home on the 23 of April 1910.
He is (was) one of the towering figures in the American Literature because he is funny and smart and
willing and the most powerful and I think it was something deeply in the American character that
response to that.
